Details
Hōsen-in is found in the precincts of Shorin-in temple where training for Shomyo chanting of the Tendai sect of Buddhism takes place. Immediately through the front gate, you can see a large bush that is sheared into a shape of Ōmifuji mountain of Shiga prefecture. The Shoin (study) was rebuilt in the 17th century and the ceiling of its hallway was made with timber from the Fushimijo Castle known as the "ceiling of blood". The name was chosen because of its stains of blood that was spilled and to remember the 300 or so men who were defending the castle that committed suicide during the battle of Fushimijō. In the main building you can enjoy a cup of Macha tea and sweets while gazing at a beautiful view of the garden. In the garden, there is a pine tree that's has been growing for over 700 years.
