The Minamiza Theatre was the first kabuki theater built in Japan in 1615. Today, the theater is used for a wide variety of performances including musicals and modern plays. Kabuki performances in Kyoto are put on irregularly throughout the year (May, June, Sept.) , but December's Kao-mise, stages the year's most popular plays with leading roles played by the country's top kabuki actors. Kaomise features two long performances (10:30-15:00; and 16:00-21:30) and takes place from Dec. 1-26.
