Into & Out of Kyoto

Shinkansen

The Shinkansen (Bullet train) is the fastest (up to 300Km/Hr (186 Miles/hr)) and safest form of transportation in Japan. There has never been documentation of any accident or malfunction in over 30 years of its operation. It is the quickest way to major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. There are both reserved and unreserved cars. Unreserved cars are less expensive, but you are not guaranteed a seat. Drinks, snacks and and box lunches (obento) are available from service wagons that regularly pass through the train aisles. There are designated smoking and non-smoking cars to be aware of. Green Cars are First class carriages that only exist on the Tokaido and San-yo line (Nozomi). Green cars are indicated by a green 'clover' symbol next to the entrance door.

∗Japan Rail Pass

This pass is the probably the most well known discount ticket for travellers from abroad. This is available in 7,14, and 21 day validities. It allows you to ride any JR train throughout the country as well as the shinkansen. The pass is not valid for "NOZOMI" trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. The pass can only be bought overseas.

Train

The JR Line as well as other less expensive private train lines connect major cities with Kyoto. Though not as time efficient as the Shinkansen, trains are a decent way of making day-trips out of Kyoto.
